Your updated 2020 healthy & gluten-free makeup list is here!
Did you know gluten can be found in makeup? Yup, I hate to break it to you. The good news? Not every Celiac or Gluten-Sensitive person reacts to gluten in makeup. But for those, it bothers...Like me, and I'm sure like you, finding gluten-free makeup can be a pain.
When I research gluten-free makeup online it's hard to find out what is exactly gluten-free. I find it much easier to call the manufacturer myself.
Now I'm not going to say when I first went gluten-free I was all about doing the research, but when I couldn't get the help or answers I needed, I had to start taking care of it myself. Because if it wasn't me, who was it going to be?
During the first few years of diagnosis, I didn't realize that the symptoms makeup left were actually from makeup I was wearing. Skin symptoms like Eczema, swollen, inflammed, reddened eyes and puffy eyes left me thinking I had a food allergy. Later down the road, I got allergy testing, sensitivity testing, chemical testing, and environmental testing to narrow down some of the symptoms. Some were not figured out until recently.
Eventually, my eyeliner and shadow bothered me when I took my makeup off at the end of the night. Mascaras made my eyelashes fall out so I started eliminating. It got to the point where I barely wore any makeup except foundation and blush. And so it was. That foundation was by Clinique which is not a gluten-free company, but some of their products are gluten ingredient free, and the blush is Loreal. Neither of these products ever bother me, so I don't rock the boat there. However, for both Loreal and Clinique you have to call the manufactuer to get the information you need, not all products are created equal. The product I used from Clinique has been discontinued. Almost 2 years ago Lipstick starting giving me trouble and now I only use one brand. In some cases, it wasn't even an issue of gluten, but of chemicals and harsh ingredients that landed me through bouts of allergy testing.
Truth is, the makeup I was using didn't have any gluten ingredients in them, and I used them for years without an issue. But between chemicals, gluten, our bodies changing, aging, sensitivities increasing, the environment, it made me realize just how important the makeup we choose to put on our body matters.
So I came up with this list. It was really for my own knowledge when trying all new makeup in the last two years and in that struggle, I realized how golden a list like this would be. I have seen a few gluten-free makeup articles out there but not many, and not many with good solid clean beauty brands. There are so many bloggers for clean beauty or organic beauty and while the ingredients look amazing, finding out if the product is gluten-free, certified gluten-free and their exact manufacturing processes has been difficult, to say the least.
My gluten-free makeup list is a combination of clean beauty, organic beauty, natural beauty and a few with chemicals that still fall under the fusion beauty category. This list will be ever-evolving. I'll add more brands as I experience them. And I'll be updating this list yearly for gluten-free safety because ingredients change all the time. If you are looking for gluten-free drug store brands this list is not for you. Enjoy my gluten-free wearing makeup gals!

CLINIQUE :
- Some Clinique products are actually gluten-free, ingredient wise. But not all are. You must call Clinique headquarters to first find out. I adore a concealer from Clinique that I have used for decades that sadly has been discontinued. I also use one of their foundation powders.
- The issue is that it is hard to find all the ingredients listed because their products are ever-evolving and changing, which is why it is best to call them directly and ask.
- The ingredients are not that clean, but when you find a product you love that is gluten-free you stick with it!
Be CAUTIOUS about the following brands:
- Formulated Gluten-free, cruelty-free and vegan-friendly
- Free of chemicals like sodium laurel sulfate, parabens, triclosan and phthalates
- Products are formulated without gluten, but made in a facility with gluten and have no control over cross-contamination at any stage. The brand cannot confirm that cross-contamination will not happen
- Use this product with caution
- Sold online, Sephora and various other beauty locations
- Update: 3rd call to Physician's Formula RX rep confirms that all products are gluten-free, however, they are not certified gluten-free. They couldn't give me any information on contamination, how great it is or how safe it is or isn't. They said they were not privy to that type of information. Cross-contamination may play a huge role in this brand, so use with caution.
- Sold online, Sephora and other beauty/drug store locations
- Put both above and here. Use with caution, and patch test before trying if you are super sensitive
- Certified gluten-free, 100% vegan, cruelty-free
- Free of toxic ingredients like parabens, artificial colors, phthalates, talc, artificial fragrances,
- Ingredients like: avocado oil, cocoa seed butter, cranberry seed extract, argan oil, coconut oil...
- I used to adore the eye shadow, but after a long period of time, I started to get allergic reactions. After researching this brand with the community to see if there were any callouts, I saw that some loved this brand and were not sensitive to the makeup while others were.
- Their allergy statement which has always made me wary of this brand was that they cannot confirm due to contamination and use of a wide variety of raw materials, that all the products are gluten-free. While they say that most of their products do not contain oats, rye, barley or wheat, they advise speaking with your doctor.
I hope you guys enjoy this list and it makes your life EASIER!

I always wondered what's in lipsticks! I don't use them much, but it's great to see an informed perspective on a popular beauty product.

It's so wild to see what actually goes into them, right?!

Hi Miranda!
OMG, I know so many who love your line. There are other ingredients unrelated to gluten-free in your products I cannot use. And since I haven't tried your products I didn't list them. But perhaps I can add a section, "haven't tried" but here great things, and add you there. Thanks for bringing this up. Happy Tuesday!
CurtissAnn Matlock
Thank you so much for generously sharing your list!
Kim
Hi Gloria
Verb hair products are gluten free and are the only ones my scalp does not have a reaction to besides california baby. And I think milk makeup is supposed to be gluten free and butter lipstick s.
Regards
Kim
Julie Rosenthal
Hey, Kim thanks for the additional gluten free product info! My readers will greatly appreciate it. While I have not tried Verb hair products, or California Baby, or Butter if it's gluten-free then go for it. Anyone that is not familiar with a brand should call the manufaturer. As for Milk when I spoke to them they couldn't verify the gluten-free status. If that has changed, good to know.
Becky
Crunchi skincare and makeup are gluten free, vegan, leaping bunny certified, And tested for heavy metals. Worth looking at. I’ve had great success with all of their products.
Julie Rosenthal
Becky! So good to know thanks for spreading the gluten-free love!!
Kathryn
Thank you for this list! It will be so very helpful for my two granddaughters! I’m curious you did not mention Epilynx...can you please comment. Thank you!
Julie Rosenthal
Hi Kathryn! Thanks for commenting. Just because it's not on my list doesn't mean it's not gluten-free. These were the companies I researched and actually used. Hope that helps!
Andrea
What a blessing your list is! Now it’s got me wondering about other products I use such as shampoo!
Julie Rosenthal
Yesssss shampoo can contain gluten and irritants. Your best best is to call the manufacturer and tell them you have an allergy question and would like to be directed to that department. Then you can ask about gluten. I love Free & Clear shampoo and conditioner and that is gluten-free. Sending love and healing vibes!
Catalina
Hi there! Thank you so much for this list! I truly appreciate it. Do you have any go to companies you use for nail polish? Thanks so much!
Julie
Catalina you're so welcome! The only nail polish I currently use is Keeki Pure & Simple for colors and Sally Hansen for Base and Top coat. I don't know any other ones! You may want to head over to CREDO and see what brands they carry, they are very conscious of ingredients.
Jessica
Hi Julie!
Thank you for this list! What are your favorite eyeliners? Also, have you contacted Acure consemetics? They are my favorite for skin care and shampoo/conditioner.
Julie
Hey babe! I have heard of Acure and I've seen it, but I haven't done the research on it. I'll add that to the Winter 2017 list. Happy to hear you have a shampoo and conditioner you love that's so important! I do too so I get that. Same with skincare. As for eyeliner, I actually use Clinique. It's gluten-free, but I wouldn't say it's at the top of the list in "clean" ingredients. But it has worked for me for years. For liquid eyeliner I use Gabriel Cosmetics and it's certified gluten-free. Hope this helps love! xx

Hi Julie, I am so happy I found your site! I am a vegan with a sensitivity to wheat and lactose intolerant. A few years ago I started using products from Arbonne that are certified gluten free, no GMO's, vegan certified, peta certified and free of soy, and the ingredients you mention as well as tons of other stuff I didn't want in my system. I thought the products were so great that I started a business with them and have quite a few Celiac Client's who are able to wear make-up and use skin care for the first time in years. So glad I get to make people smile :-). Have you ever investigated this company? Would be great to know your thoughts as I want to hear from those in the know. Thanks!
Julie
Hi Gloria! Glad you have found another resource that can make your lifestyle delicious! As for Arbonne, I have only heard not so great reviews when it comes to being safe for Celiac's, so I won't use the products. But if your clients aren't bothered by the line, then I'm so glad for them! Thanks for reaching out! I hope you find deliciousness on my site.
